THE SEAFORIA FIELD GUIDE
Aquarium & Turtle Filter Selection and Care Guide
Choosing an aquarium or turtle tank filter starts with installation and working water depth. Use this guide to compare the two layouts, check first use and find replacement media for your exact filter.
Hang-on-back aquarium filter or internal turtle filter?
| Check | Aquarium filter | Turtle filter kit |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Hangs over the aquarium rim, with its body behind the tank. | Internal layout for a compatible low-water habitat. |
| Before ordering | Measure the rim, lid opening and rear clearance; check intake position. | Confirm working water depth and mounting position for the exact unit. |
| Water flow | Adjustable return flow, extendable intake and a surface intake. | Waterfall return. Do not assume the aquarium filter’s flow control applies to this unit. |
| First use | Fill and prime as directed before switching on. | Follow the supplied mounting and operating-water-level instructions. |
| Included refills | Check the individual product’s contents. | One filter plus one pack of four extra matching media pieces. |

Will the filter fit your tank?
- Rim and lid: check the trim, bracing and lid opening where the filter mounts.
- Rear clearance: leave the space required by the filter body, tubing and maintenance access.
- Water level: compare your normal level with the supplied instructions. Never run the filter dry.
- Power: check the electrical rating on your unit against your supply before use.
How low can the turtle filter’s water be?
One numerical minimum has not been confirmed for every current unit. For a shallow setup, ask Seaforia to check the working water depth before ordering. Include the model label, planned depth and mounting details. Low-water capability does not determine the appropriate habitat depth for an animal.
How to prime and start the aquarium filter
- Read the instructions supplied with your exact unit; confirm mounting, water level and electrical requirements.
- Fit the intake and media as directed. Fill the hang-on-back filter housing with water and prime it before connecting power.
- Check that water returns to the tank and inspect the installation for leaks.
- If water does not flow, switch off. Check the water level, intake connections and priming instructions before trying again. Do not keep the pump running dry.
Do not assume automatic restart after a power cut. Check the filter when power returns, following the same model-specific instructions. See the aquarium filter parts and setup demonstrations.
Routine filter care
Inspect the intake and media regularly. Disconnect power before removing or cleaning parts, following the supplied instructions. Use your exact model’s guidance for media, impeller cleaning and reassembly. If weak flow persists after those checks, contact filter support.
Water flow too strong, weak or noisy?
For the aquarium filter, use its flow-control knob and observe the current in your setup. Adjustable flow does not by itself establish suitability for every fish, fry or shrimp; the lowest flow has not been confirmed.
- Falling-water sound: check the working water level and return drop. Stay within the model’s operating limits.
- Air or intermittent flow: switch off and check the intake position, water level, connections and priming process as directed.
- Rattling or vibration: check mounting contact. Disconnect power before inspecting the intake or impeller according to the manual.
- Weak flow: inspect for blocked intake or media and follow the model’s cleaning instructions.
The aquarium filter’s surface intake draws water near the surface. It is not a marine protein skimmer. Running sound varies with installation and water level; silent operation is not promised. If the problem continues, send support your model, water depth and a short description of the sound.
Cloudy water and green water need different checks
Suspended debris, bacterial clouding and suspended green algae can look similar at first. Check the colour and any recent changes to feeding, stocking, lighting or maintenance. Test the water; clear-looking water alone does not establish suitable water conditions.
Mechanical media can capture suspended particles, but changing a cartridge is not a diagnosis for every cloudy tank. Follow an appropriate testing and water-change routine for your habitat. We do not promise a clear-water deadline, permanent clarity or a substitute for routine maintenance. See Seachem’s aquarium support and its guide to cloudy aquarium water for background on the different causes.
A filter’s water-treatment light does not replace species-appropriate basking UVB lighting. Check the lighting and habitat needs of the animals you keep separately.
Which replacement filter media matches your unit?
Read the model printed on the actual filter, then compare the replacement listing, shape and pack contents. Similar-looking SF and ST parts are not automatically interchangeable. If a label and listing disagree, ask us to confirm the replacement before ordering.
The turtle kit includes one ST-01 filter and one four-piece pack of extra media. It does not contain four filters, four packs or a guaranteed four-month supply. View the ST-01 four-piece replacement pack. A standalone replacement pack does not include the filter unit.
Browse Seaforia replacement filter media. Follow the exact model’s cleaning and replacement instructions; the media’s condition and your tank determine the care it needs.
Still checking the fit?
Send a photo of the filter label, tank rim and lid, available mounting space, normal water depth and the cartridge you are replacing. Contact Seaforia for a filter fit or media check, or compare the two filter layouts.
